Ask five agencies what a website costs and you will get five numbers that differ by a factor of ten. That is not because four of them are lying. It is because "a website" can mean anything from a one-page template to a custom e-commerce platform, and because agencies price their overhead as much as their output.

What each budget actually buys

Under $500: a DIY builder subscription or a template install. You do the work, or someone spends an afternoon dropping your text into a theme used by thousands of other businesses. Fine for testing an idea. Risky as the permanent face of a real business.

$500 to $1,500: the sweet spot for most small businesses. At this level you can get a genuinely custom design, professional copywriting, mobile-first build, and on-page SEO. This is where our own flat-rate packages sit: $475 for a starter site, $800 for a full business site, $1,250 for a premium build with e-commerce.

$2,500 to $10,000: traditional local agency territory. You are often paying for the agency's office, project managers, and meetings. The site itself is frequently the same scope as the tier above.

$10,000 and up: justified for complex web applications, large e-commerce catalogs, or enterprise integrations. Rarely justified for a service business that needs to look credible and generate calls.

The four things that actually drive price

Page count matters less than people think. What moves the number: custom design versus template, whether copywriting is included, e-commerce or booking functionality, and how much SEO groundwork is done at build time. Ask any quote to itemize those four. If a $4,000 quote includes none of them explicitly, you are paying for something other than your website.

The costs nobody mentions up front

Domains run $10 to $20 a year. Hosting runs $10 to $50 a month. Maintenance is the one that bites: an unmaintained site slowly breaks, gets hacked, or falls out of Google. Budget for a care plan or accept that your site has a shelf life. We cover this in our maintenance guide.

One more honest number: a website that generates two extra customers a month pays for an $800 build inside a quarter in most service businesses. The real cost question is not the invoice. It is how much an outdated site is quietly costing you now. That math is covered in why your website gets traffic but no calls.
