Two competitors, same service, same prices. One has 9 reviews from 2023, the other has 87 with several from this month. You already know who gets the call. Reviews are the single strongest trust signal in local search, they influence rankings, and they are the one marketing asset your competitors cannot copy.
Why happy customers do not review you
Not because they will not. Because the moment passes. They meant to, then dinner happened. The entire game is capturing the moment of peak satisfaction, and making the review a 30-second task instead of a 5-minute hunt.
The system: ask at the peak, make it one tap
Get your direct review link from your Google Business Profile ("Ask for reviews" gives you a short URL). Then build the ask into the finish of every job: the moment the customer says thanks, the invoice email, the follow-up text. Word it personally and specifically: "It was great working on your kitchen, Maria. If you have 30 seconds, a Google review really helps a small business like ours: [link]." Personal, specific, one tap. That is the whole trick, repeated weekly.
What not to do
Do not buy reviews or review yourself; Google removes them and can penalize the profile. Do not offer discounts for reviews, which violates the rules. Do not send a hundred requests in one week after years of none; a sudden spike looks fake and gets filtered. Slow and steady wins, literally: recency is a ranking factor, so four reviews a month beats fifty in January.
Reply to every single one
Replies are read by future customers more than by the reviewer. Thank the good ones specifically. Answer the bad ones calmly with facts and an offer to make it right; a composed response to an unfair review is the best advertising there is. Then let the reviews do their work on your Google profile and your website, where we feature them prominently on every build.
